Most Mid-century houses are not made of metal (hat tip to the Alcoa house) but we all have a few key metallic elements to choose when planning an update.  The choices you make can have a big effect on the overall feel of the house.  

Picking brushed nickel door handles or cabinet pulls can give your house an unwanted “contemporary cottage” feel even when everything else you’ve planned says “mid-century chic.”  So make sure you don’t let a default choice mess up your style.
